SECTION 6: HOW TO POSITION YOURSELF FOR CONTRACTS

Operating independently rather than through a single app increases your earning potential significantly. Here is what most successful non-CDL contractors have in common:

•       Own Authority: Getting your own DOT and MC numbers (FMCSA registration) unlocks the highest-paying load boards including Amazon Relay, DAT, and Truckstop. Registration typically costs under $400.

•       Insurance: Commercial cargo insurance and primary liability are required for most platform and direct contracts. Budget $3,000 to $7,000 annually depending on vehicle and coverage limits.

•       Stack Platforms: Top-earning non-CDL contractors run 2 to 3 platforms simultaneously. A common stack: Amazon Relay or FRAYT for scheduled freight, GoShare or Dolly for on-demand, and Roadie for route-aligned gigs.

•       Vehicle Age: Most platforms require vehicles 2012 or newer for box trucks. Cargo vans are typically accepted from 2004 or newer.

•       ELD Compliance: Box trucks running OTR interstate routes may be subject to ELD requirements depending on GVWR and hours. Confirm your compliance status with FMCSA before taking OTR loads.

•       Apply Directly: Beyond platforms, direct relationships with furniture retailers, home improvement chains, and hospital systems produce the most stable, recurring contract income.

All listings verified as of May 2026. Requirements and market availability are subject to change. Confirm details directly with each company before applying.
